How to see what apps a Shopify store uses (and what they cost)

What the tool above does, explained step by step so you can check it yourself.

How we detect the apps on a Shopify store

Almost every Shopify app that changes what shoppers see has to load something on the storefront: a script, a stylesheet or a block inside the theme. That code is public, because your browser downloads it every time you open the page.

The detector downloads the home page and one product page, just like a browser, and looks for three fingerprints: the comments Shopify adds around every app block, the file paths of theme app extensions and the script URLs that older apps inject. Then it matches those fingerprints against our app database.

We don't run any code, we don't log into the store admin and we don't store personal data: we only read the public HTML, the same any visitor sees.

What an app embed is (and why it leaves a trace)

Since Online Store 2.0 themes, apps plug in through theme app extensions: app blocks, which you place inside a section (say, a quantity-discount block on the product page), and app embeds, which you switch on under Theme settings > App embeds and which load on every page (a slide cart, a pop-up, a chat).

Shopify serves those extension files from cdn.shopify.com/extensions/ and wraps each block in a comment like "shopify://apps/app-name/blocks/…". Older apps use ScriptTags: a list of external scripts Shopify loads when the store opens. All three are visible in the page source.

How to check a Shopify store's apps by hand, step by step

  1. 1

Open the store on a computer and press Ctrl+U (Cmd+Option+U on a Mac) to view the page source.

  2. 2

Search (Ctrl+F) for "shopify://apps/". Every match is an app block or embed, and the text after it is the app's handle, e.g. "judge-me-reviews".

  3. 3

Search for "cdn.shopify.com/extensions/". The folder after the long ID names the app and its version, e.g. "upcart-2-413".

  4. 4

Search for "asyncLoad" or "var urls": it's the list of scripts from older apps, and each script's domain gives the app away (static.klaviyo.com, cdn.rebuyengine.com…).

  5. 5

Open a product page too and repeat: many apps (quantity breaks, size charts, sticky add to cart) only load there.

  6. 6

Look the handle up on the Shopify App Store to see what the app does and what it costs.

When an app is worth keeping

Replacing apps with theme features saves money and speeds the store up, but it isn't always the right call. Keep the app when:

  • It does something a theme can't: sending email, collecting verified reviews, billing subscriptions or handling returns.
  • It works with data outside the store: ad attribution, points programs or a multichannel helpdesk.
  • You use it heavily and it drives measurable sales (say, AI recommendations you've A/B tested).
  • Its cost is negligible compared to what it brings, and removing it would mean rebuilding processes.

For everything else (quantity breaks, slide cart, countdown timers, pop-ups, sticky add to cart, mega menus…), paying a monthly fee per feature adds up fast and adds scripts that slow the store down.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell what apps a Shopify store uses?

Paste its URL into the detector above: it reads the public code of the home page and one product page and lists the apps it recognizes. To do it by hand, open the page source and search for "shopify://apps/" and "cdn.shopify.com/extensions/".

Is the Shopify app detector free?

Yes. You don't need an account or an email to see the result. We only ask for your email if you want the full report sent to you along with the 300+ sales hooks.

Does it detect every installed app?

No. We only see apps that load something on the public storefront. Apps that work in the admin (inventory, invoices, shipping) or only at checkout leave no trace, and some apps only load on specific pages.

How much do Shopify apps cost per month?

It depends on the app and the store's volume, but typical conversion apps cost $3–40 a month each. A store with a slide cart, quantity breaks, a countdown timer, a pop-up and sticky add to cart often pays $40–120 a month for those alone.

How can I save on Shopify apps?

Check which apps do things your theme could do out of the box and remove them. A theme with those features built in, like Pixelion, is a one-time purchase and removes each app's monthly fee and extra scripts.

What does "Partial" mean?

The theme covers the app's main use, but the app does more (like AI recommendations or tracking notifications). You decide whether you need the extra; we leave it out of the minimum savings.

Do you store data about the stores I audit?

We keep each domain's audit result for 24 hours so we don't download the store again if someone repeats the check. We don't store who ran it: to prevent abuse we only use an anonymous ID (a hash of the IP) that is deleted within days.

Can I audit a competitor's store?

Yes. The detector only reads what any visitor sees on the public storefront, so you can audit any Shopify store that's open to the public.
